Learn how you can participate in the Humana Festival.

The Theatre Professionals Grant

Actors Theatre welcomes practitioners working in small budget theatres or as freelance artists to a complimentary weekend of new works and spirited conversation at the 43rd Humana Festival of New American Plays.

Applicants are granted a ticket package to a Humana Festival weekend, which includes up to five world premiere plays, transportation from the airport on key weekends, invitations to events and panel discussions, and a Humana Festival gift. In addition, Actors Theatre will make efforts to arrange for a brief meeting with a theatre professional based on the recipient’s area of interest. Recipients may also purchase one additional weekend package at 50% off.

Who can apply?

Someone who...
...has demonstrated an interest in or worked with new plays and/or playwrights. employed in any area of theatre by a 501c3 with a budget of under $1,000,000 or is self-employed. available to attend a Festival weekend at the 2019 Humana Festival (March 15-17, March 22-24, March 29-31 or April 4-7).

What are the rules?

You must complete all parts of the application. Applications must be received by Friday, January 11, 2018.
Applicants must be able to provide transportation to Louisville and housing for their selected Festival weekend.
Once a Festival package has been awarded, they cannot be exchanged for a different weekend or performance.
Tickets awarded through the grant program cannot be resold or transferred. Individuals that sell any donated tickets will be permanently disqualified from the program.
Grants will be awarded to one applicant per Festival Weekend.
An applicant may apply for up to four Festival weekends.
An applicant may not receive more than one grant per season.

How will I know if I'm a grant recipient?

Applications will be reviewed by a cross-departmental committee of Actors Theatre staff.
You will receive an email from Elizabeth Greenfield, Public Relations Manager during the week of January 21, 2019 with the confirmed weekend dates for which you have been awarded.
You will receive a second email from a member of the Box Office staff at Actors Theatre when your tickets are seated and confirmed with further information for your time at the Festival.

Share the Spark

Every year, Festival guests enjoy spirited conversation and panel discussions hosted by industry leaders. This spring, Actors Theatre invites guests like you to take the stage at the 43rd Humana Festival of New American Plays!

Share the Spark offers Festival guests the chance to share their vision for the American theatre in a public forum on Friday, April 5, 2019, during the Humana Festival’s culminating weekend.

Want to share your vision for the American theatre? Maybe it’s an artistic realization. Maybe it’s a proposal. Maybe it’s a rallying cry. Topics of all sorts and styles are welcome; each presenter will receive 5 minutes to share their light-bulb moment, enduring story, or passion project.

The Humana Festival’s culminating weekend puts you, along with the nation’s top artists, producers, practitioners and more, under one roof for a thrilling toast to the newest works in American theatre.

Applicants should be planning to attend this spring’s Humana Festival’s final weekend: April 4-7, 2019. If selected, presenters need to be available for a dress rehearsal and presentation on Friday, April 5, 2019. Presenters will be responsible for their own travel and ticket package purchase. Presenters will receive a packaged, digital video recording of their presentation as well as a special Humana Festival gift bag.

Who should submit a "Share the Spark" proposal?

A strong, succinct storyteller with something true, relevant, and unique to say.
A person who has demonstrated an interest in the future of the American theatre.

What are the guidelines?

Applicants must complete all parts of the application. Applications must be received by Friday, February 8, 2019. 
Applicants are responsible for their own Festival ticket package, transportation to Louisville, and accommodation.
Already purchased a ticket package to another Festival weekend? If selected as a presenter, you may exchange the previously-purchased package by contacting Kim McKercher, Ticket Sales Director. You will be responsible for any difference in ticket price.
One presentation proposal per applicant.
Once selected, panelists must meet required milestones including digital content submission and on-site dress rehearsal. Final presentations must meet the time limit.

What are the guidelines?

Applications will be reviewed by a cross-departmental committee of Actors Theatre staff and may be contacted for a brief phone interview about their proposal.
All applicants will receive an email regarding their application status during the week of January 28, 2019.
All presenters will receive presentation preparation timeline including requisite rehearsal date with their acceptance.
